At Saint Joseph’s, the Borough, we believe Mathematics is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality Mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of Mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. We want children to become fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics so that they develop conceptual understanding along with the ability to rapidly recall and apply knowledge accurately. We want pupils to make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. We intend to promote the vital importance of Mathematics in everyday life with children learning through real life contexts. This will hopefully equip children at Saint Joseph’s with the skills and confidence in maths to facilitate their further study and work.
