Parental Involvement

Parents are the first and principal educators of their children – as the Bishops of the Second Vatican Council proclaimed in their Declaration on Christian Education – and Saint Joseph’s School aims to involve them in all aspects of their child’s school life.

In the Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception classes) we offer families of new children the opportunity to have a Home Visit by staff. This is part of the welcoming of a child into our school community and is an opportunity to begin the positive home-school relationship we wish to continue throughout the child’s time at Saint Joseph’s.

In Nursery and Reception, parents are given a Story Pack at the weekend to share with their child. In other year groups children are given homework, which varies according to the child’s age. All children take regularly take home books to read or share with their family. Parents are asked to support the child with his or her learning.

All parents are given an opportunity to meet with their child’s classteacher three times a year at our Parents’ Evenings. These appointments provide opportunities for staff and parents to share information about the child and to discuss progress. In the Summer term we also invite parents to an exhibition of work from each year group so that parents can see what the children have been learning about.

Staff are willing to see parents on any matter concerning the children. They are available for a brief word just before school or just after school finishes at 3.30 p.m. If the matter you wish to discuss is complex or lengthy, they will arrange a meeting with you at a mutually convenient time.

Parents are most welcome at all social and community events (liturgies, assemblies, performances, fete etc) held within the school and are kept informed about all aspects of school life in our fortnightly newsletter available on our web-site.

The school also holds a variety of information sessions for parents so that they can learn more about what we teach the children and how they can support their children’s education at home.

Recent sessions have included: phonics, reading, writing, maths, Science, Behaviour Strategies, Family Learning through Literacy, e-safety, health, emotional and physical well-being, general class information and Secondary Transfer.

Parents may be invited to accompany a class on a school trip or asked to come and talk to a class about something which they have particular expertise in.

There is a current Parent Association that is active in raising funds for the school.  It always welcomes new members.  Please contact the office for further information.
